The Beginning of
La Salette International Crèche Museum.
The museum was founded by Fr. Manuel Pereira, MS (1939–2022), a Missionary of Our Lady of La Salette and a native of the Azores islands. While stationed at La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, Fr. Manuel started the museum to share his passion for Christmas and Azores’ traditions. Visitors can witness all of this in the Presépio that Fr. Manuel created, which evokes his native hamlet and Christmas traditions in the Azores. Soon after, people began donating Crèches to add to his collection, and the museum continued to develop thanks to donations from individuals and organizations all over the world, preserving, in this way, cultural heritage and creative legacy.
Hundreds of Stories of Faith
The current display was carefully restructured, reorganized, and curated, for two years, by artist Alicia Crespo and Fr. Bernie Baris, M.S., a Missionary of Our Lady of La Salette, honoring the foundation laid by Fr. Manuel Pereira, M.S. Their work transformed the museum into a place of elegance and simplicity, where the beauty, color and texture of each piece shines through. The current renovated permanent exhibit, featuring 1561 Nativity Sets, illustrates well how Jesus' Birth has been expressed and celebrated in different cultures and traditions around the world, thus emphasizing the universality of the Good News.
In 2021, the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette received a precious collection of pieces illustrating "Judea, Jerusalem, and Galilee at the time of Jesus."
In November 2023, artist Alicia Crespo and Fr. Flavio Gillio, M.S., assembled and showcased this collection as a panorama.
On request, Fr. Flavio, a Biblical scholar,
is available to give a talk to groups on this exhibit.
